Welcome to CrossFit Echelon, you're about to find out what your made of.
Hometown: Rocklin, CA
Occupation: Student at Sierra and Restaurant Expeditor
When did you begin CrossFitting: Feb 2012
Favorite WOD: To be determined.
Why did you choose CrossFit Echelon: Before starting at Echelon, I was going to another CrossFit gym for a short amount of time and, though I liked the workouts, I wasn't a fan of how the other CrossFit gym was run. I didn’t want to discontinue the workouts altogether, but seeing as I was a beginner to Crossfit, I felt that I needed more direction during the workouts than I was getting. Soon after realizing this, one of my friends told me about Crossfit Echelon and how much he enjoyed the trainers there; he suggested that I try it out. I completed my primary assessment workout with Adam and was instantly hooked after only a couple of workouts. I signed up in February and have been going to Echelon between three and six times a week; I am in the best shape I’ve ever been in. Adam and Mark are both amazing instructors; great at pushing people's limits, but also knowing no to push anyone too hard. Each of these instructors are huge advocates of injury prevention, but they are also qualified to deal with injuries, should they occur. One trait I really appreciate with Adam is how he is able to identify strengths and weaknesses that people have and is then able to push them outside their comfort zone to help them grow.
Improve overall health and fitness levels, especially areas of weakness. Get into a regular routine for working out. Help get my asthma under control and improve my cardiovascular abilities.
Before starting at CrossFit Echelon, I had several physical weaknesses. I couldn't do a single pull-up, and can now do about fifteen in a row. At the gym, I would never try anything that was new or outside my comfort zone, but I am now pushed to do this every time I work out at Echelon. One specific example of this is running. I have hated running anything over 800 meters since high school, but since I started at Echelon I have been urged to break this hatred, and have even done a couple half marathons in the last six months. Another weakness that has always affected my fitness is my relatively severe case of asthma, which is now much easier to control since my cardiovascular system has improved from the workouts. I have also always had troubles with workouts involving the lower back because of my scoliosis, but anytime it (or any other injury) is giving me problems, Adam and Mark both know how to help me deal with it. Lastly, before I started Crossfit, I was definitely one of those people who would tell themselves every so often, “Okay, I’m going to start working out at least __ many times a week.” Of course, I’d stick with the routine for a couple weeks, then get lazy and stop going. And even when I was going to the gym during that time, I’d probably never raised my heart rate high enough to improve in any areas of fitness. With Crossfit, neither one of those options is really plausible. The workouts make you compete with yourself, so they take both not going and not trying out of the equation. Working out at Echelon also just makes working out something to look forward to, between the great sense of community and the rewarding feeling you get after kicking the WOD's butt… Or after letting it kick your’s.
